Christmas crumble





Apple crumble is a British style dessert with apple filling and  cookie crumbs .This is the festive recipe of apple crumble with Northern European vanilla sauce . It is a very easy and sweet sauce quiet different from custurd sauce and creme anglaise . This is perfect for Christmas or holiday lunches .You do not want ice cream as we make a vanilla sauce .

preparation time ; about 45 minutes
serves ; 4

4  sour apples
80 g marzipan
160 g of plain flour
40 g Almond  or hazelnuts, ground
40 g Walnuts
100 g Butter, cold
65 g  brown sugar
1 tbsp of rum or orange juice
salt
1 tsp of vanilla extract or pulp
1 teaspoon cinnamon , powdered or crushed

For the sauce:
600 ml milk
1 tsp of vanilla extract
25 g sugar
25 g corn starch
2 egg yolks


Preheat the oven to 160 ° C  or 175 ° C top / bottom heat.

Roughly chop the walnuts . Cut the cold butter into small cubes. Put the flour, cold butter cubes, ground nuts, sugar,  vanilla, rum flavor, cinnamon and the pinch of salt in a mixing bowl and mix into a crumbly dough.

Wash and peel the apples, remove the core and cut into cubes.


Now a baking dish or tart dish is greased.

First layer apples, then the chopped walnuts and the marzipan. This is simply plucked into small pieces and evenly distributed. Finally, the dough is distributed crumbly and then the crumble can be put in the oven.

It is baked for about 30-35 minutes.

For the vanilla sauce, In a pot add the milk , sugar, vanilla , the cornstarch and the egg yolks, stirred with a whisk and then heated on the stove with constant stirring until the sauce thickens slightly. This is removed from the stove  . Then it should cool a little before serving with the crumble.

The crumble tastes best lukewarm.
